Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
This Renaissance Tempranillo is intensely expressive on the nose, showing off notes of ripe dark fruit, leather, tobacco, vanilla, baking spices, cedar and earth. Blackberry pie, vanilla, cola. toasty oak, coffee and dried herbs complement the full and textural mouthfeel. Pomegranate-like bright acidity lingers on the finish, supported by youthful, grippy tannins. Approachable now if decanted, but will show at its best if tucked away in the cellar for a few years.
Production Notes
Hand-picked and hand-sorted lots of Tempranillo were destemmed, lightly crushed and fermented in small 1-ton open-topped fermenters, using selected yeast strains. The ferments were punched down by hand 2-3 times daily, and were pressed into a combination of American (86%) and French (14%) oak (18.4% new Zebra barrels). After malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged for 20 months on fine lees. The best barrels of the lot were then blended with a small amount of Syrah, and a portion was transferred back into two 3rd-fill French oak barrels to age a further 12 months. These two barrels are set to be blended and bottled without fining or filtration in August.
Winemaker Notes
Our second-ever Renaissance Tempranillo is a barrel selection of the finest lots from 2022. The bright fruit core and lifted aromatics derived from Shuttleworth Creek are complemented beautifully by the power, structure and earthiness of Stag's Hollow Vineyard, and we felt that the quality of this limited blend (only 2 barrels) warranted an additional year in barrel - much like a Gran Reserva style Spanish Tempranillo. A small amount of Syrah was blended to enhance the wine's aromatics, but this is unmistakably Tempranillo in flavour profile. This is a powerfully-structured wine that will reward careful cellaring.
