tags Hollow Winery is the culmination of a longtime dream for Larry Gerelus, who prior to making his dream a reality, worked in the Calgary petroleum industry, as did Linda. It all started in 1981 with the first sampling of Okanagan wines, made by the neophyte wine industry. Combined with the desire to eventually live in the Okanagan and the belief that that there was potential for good wine, the initial seeds were sown. In 1991, Larry spent the summer researching prime grape growing areas in the Okanagan, which led him to the Okanagan Falls area. (Described by one well-known viticulturist as the grape growing centre of the universe for the valley.) In 1992 the existing 10 acre vineyard was purchased, and in 1995 along with the construction of Stags Hollow Winery, the first vintage was created.
Over the years, the vineyard has consistently produced grapes with excellent ripening and fruit profiles. The areas microclimate, along with the ideal gravel and clay soils has provided superb conditions for Stags Hollows grapes.
Their philosophy is this: Grow grapes of the highest quality to produce intensely fine wines, which express the bouquet, flavours, and textures of the terroir. To ensure this, cropping levels are kept low; first at winter pruning and then by adjusting throughout the growing season, resulting in ripe grapes at harvest. Both water levels and nutrient levels are kept at a minimum. The trellis systems are used to allow for more open canopies and sun exposed fruit. These measures have resulted in wines exhibiting good structure and distinct fruit profiles.
Stags Hollow wines are handcrafted and of limited production and the style is a fusion of old and new world. The Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir are aged between ten months and two years in French and American oak barriques. Currently, Stags Hollow produces less than 2000 cases annually. Most of the wine is made from estate grapes, but grapes are also purchased from small growers who share Stags Hollow passion for excellence.
